Getting Married in Vermont

Marriage licenses may be obtained from the Brookline Town Clerk’s office and the cost is $80. The license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. During that time an authorized person must perform your wedding ceremony – otherwise, the license is void.

To apply for a marriage license 

  1. Complete the Application for Vermont License of Civil Marriage
  2. Bring the application and the required documents to the town clerk’s office
  3. Pay the $80 fee
  4. Have both parties sign the application

Required documents 

  • Proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or passport
  • Information about your parents, including their places of birth
  • Information about any previous marriages or civil unions

License validity 

  • The license is valid for 60 days from the date it’s issued
  • During that time, an authorized person must perform the wedding ceremony

After the ceremony 

  • The person who performed the ceremony returns the license to the town clerk within 10 days
  • The town clerk files the original and the couple receives a marriage certificate
