Getting Married in Vermont

Marriage licenses may be obtained from the Brookline Town Clerk’s office and the cost is $80. The license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. During that time an authorized person must perform your wedding ceremony – otherwise, the license is void.

Obtaining a Marriage License & Certificate

  1. Complete and sign the Application for Vermont License of Civil Marriage.
  2. Bring (or email) the application to the town clerk’s office.
  3. The town clerk will transfer information from the application to the Marriage License.
  4. Each party must provide proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or passport.
  5. Pay the $80 fee (add $10 if you’d like a certified copy of the license).
  6. Sign the application in person at the Town Clerk’s office.
  7. The person who performs the ceremony must return the license to the town clerk within 10 days after the ceremony.
  8. The town clerk files the original and the couple receives a Marriage Certificate.

  • Information about any previous marriages or civil unions
