What to Do If You Find a Bat in Your Home

Mid-to-late summer is peak time for bat activity in Vermont. Since bats can carry rabies and find their way into your home or other buildings, it’s important to know what to do if you encounter one.

• Do not release the bat.
• If you can do so safely and without getting bitten, confine the bat while awaiting guidance.
• Call the Rabies Hotline at 1-800-4-RABIES or your local Game Warden for help and to determine if there has been a possible rabies exposure, including when a bat is found in the same room as a sleeping person.
Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the brain and nervous system and spreads primarily through bites from infected animals. Rabies can be prevented in people if treatment starts soon after an exposure.
