Who May Register?

To vote in Vermont, you must:

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be a resident of Vermont
  • Be 18 years of age or older on Election Day
  • Take the Vermont Voter’s Oath

How to Register

You may register:

  • Online through the Vermont Voter Portal
  • In person at the Brookline Town Clerk’s Office
  • By submitting a voter registration application
  • At the polling place on Election Day

Vermont permits Election Day voter registration. Registering before Election Day, however, gives the Town Clerk time to review your registration and helps reduce delays at the polls.

Check or Update Your Registration

Use the Vermont Voter Portal to:

  • Confirm that you are registered
  • Update your name or address
  • Find your polling location
  • Review your absentee ballot status
  • View a sample ballot when one is available

Early and Absentee Voting

How to Request a Ballot

For elections in which ballots are not automatically mailed, you may request an early or absentee ballot:

  • Through the Vermont Voter Portal
  • By contacting the Brookline Town Clerk’s Office
  • By submitting a written request
  • In person at the Town Clerk’s Office once ballots are available

Requests for mailed ballots should be made as early as possible to allow enough time for mailing and return.

General Election Ballots

For statewide general elections held in even-numbered years, Vermont mails ballots automatically to qualified active voters. Voters should make sure their mailing address is current.

Ballots are not automatically mailed for every primary, municipal, school, or special election. Check the information posted for each election to determine whether you must request a ballot.

Returning Your Ballot

Carefully follow all instructions included with your ballot.

Your voted ballot must be received in time to be counted. Depending on when it is returned, a ballot may be:

  • Mailed to the Town Clerk’s Office
  • Delivered to the Town Clerk’s Office
  • Delivered to the polling place by the close of polls on Election Day

Do not wait until the last minute to return a ballot by mail.

Voting in a Vermont Primary

Vermont does not register voters by political party.

For a statewide primary election, voters receive the available party ballots but may vote on only one party ballot. The voter places the unvoted ballots in the designated container.

Follow the instructions provided with the ballots carefully. Voting on more than one party ballot will cause the primary vote to be invalid.

Accessible Voting

Accessible voting equipment is available at the polling place so voters with disabilities may vote privately and independently.

Military and Overseas Voters

Members of the United States military, their families, and United States citizens living outside the country may use the Federal Voting Assistance Program to register and request a ballot.

Election Results

Unofficial Brookline election results are normally posted after the ballots have been counted. Results remain unofficial until all required reviews, canvassing, and certification have been completed.

Annual Town Meeting

Brookline’s Annual Town Meeting is generally held in March. Some town business may be decided from the floor at Town Meeting, while other questions or offices may be decided by Australian ballot.

Information will be posted before each Annual Town Meeting, including:

  • The Town Meeting Warning
  • Town Report
  • Meeting location and time
  • Meeting minutes and election results

Running for Local Office

Information about elected town offices, nomination petitions, consent forms, filing deadlines, and other candidate requirements is available from the Town Clerk.

Candidate deadlines vary depending on the office and election. Anyone considering running for office should contact the Town Clerk well before the filing deadline.
